Sliding Door Lock Types: Mortise Locks, Keepers and Handles

Sliding Door Lock Types: Mortise Locks, Keepers and Handles

A sliding door “lock” is usually a small system rather than one part. The interior and exterior handles operate a mechanism in the panel, which engages a keeper attached to the frame.

Mortise lock

The mortise lock sits inside the narrow edge of the moving panel. Depending on design, it may use a hook, latch or multiple locking points. Its backset, faceplate, screw spacing and operating direction must match the door.

Keeper or strike

The keeper is mounted on the jamb. Its position controls whether the latch engages fully. Moving it can correct minor alignment only after the panel itself closes correctly.

Handle set

The handle gives the user leverage and transfers movement to the internal lock. A loose handle may have failed screws, a worn lever or incorrect spacing. Replacing it with a look-alike part does not guarantee compatibility.

Keyed cylinder

Some exterior handles include keyed access. Cylinder compatibility, orientation and connection to the lock mechanism must be verified.

Auxiliary security

Bars and secondary locks can supplement the original system when suitable, but they should not interfere with emergency egress, damage the frame or substitute for a failed primary latch.

Diagnose alignment first

If the panel has dropped on worn rollers, the strongest new lock will still miss the keeper. Correct operation begins with a door that rolls, closes and meets the jamb evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the lock work when the door is open but not closed?

The mechanism may function, while the latch and keeper fail to align when the panel reaches the jamb.

Can I replace only the handle?

Yes when the lock is sound and a compatible handle is available.

What is a double-hook lock?

It uses two hook points. The replacement must match the original door and keeper arrangement.
