Tempered, Laminated and Insulated Sliding Door Glass Explained

Tempered, Laminated and Insulated Sliding Door Glass Explained

“Sliding door glass” can describe several constructions with different safety, storm and energy characteristics. Identifying the existing glass is important before replacement.

Tempered glass

Tempered safety glass is heat-treated and designed to break into many small pieces rather than large sharp shards. Markings are often etched near a corner. Tempered glass cannot be cut after tempering.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass bonds layers to an interlayer that helps hold fragments together after breakage. It is used in many impact-resistant products, but laminated glass alone does not prove the complete door assembly has an impact rating.

Insulated glass unit

An insulated unit uses two or more panes separated by a sealed space. It can improve thermal performance. Fog or moisture between panes generally indicates failure of that sealed unit.

Low-E coating

A low-emissivity coating manages radiant heat transfer. Product performance should be compared using whole-door ratings, including U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, rather than relying only on the phrase “Low-E.”

Impact-rated assemblies

Impact performance belongs to the tested door system: glass, frame, hardware, anchorage and installation. Replacing glass with a different type without confirming the approved configuration can affect the assembly.

Repair planning

Record etched markings, pane thickness, overall unit thickness, tint, dimensions and door model. Glass work should be performed with appropriate safety practices; damaged panels should not be handled casually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all laminated glass hurricane glass?

No. Impact resistance is established for a tested assembly and configuration.

Can fogged insulated glass be cleaned between panes?

Not as ordinary maintenance. The sealed unit has failed and typically requires replacement.

How can I identify tempered glass?

Look for a permanent safety marking near a corner, though a professional should verify uncertain glass.
