When Is a Sliding Door Gap an Energy Problem?

When Is a Sliding Door Gap an Energy Problem?

A draft at a sliding door can come from an actual gap, worn weatherstripping, poorly engaged interlocks or the thermal performance of a large glass area. The repair depends on which path is allowing heat or air to move.

Mechanical air leaks

Uneven gaps suggest roller or frame alignment. Flattened pile seals may no longer contact the panel. A shifted stationary panel can leave interlocks separated. These conditions may be repairable without replacing the complete door.

Heat through the glass

A closed, well-sealed door can still admit solar heat. For replacement products, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient describes the fraction of solar heat transmitted; lower values reduce solar gain. U-factor describes heat transfer through the product; lower is more insulating.

Simple observations

  • Look for daylight around edges.
  • Compare the gap from top to bottom.
  • Check whether the lock pulls the panel out of position.
  • Notice whether discomfort follows direct sun or windy weather.
  • Inspect weatherstripping for missing or flattened sections.

Do not block drainage

Trying to stop air by caulking sill openings can interfere with water management. Separate intended drainage from unintended air leakage.

Repair or energy upgrade?

Repair alignment and seals when those are the root problem. Consider a new rated product when glass performance, frame condition or a broader renovation is driving the decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can weatherstripping lower cooling loss?

It can reduce unintended air leakage when correctly matched and installed.

Does Low-E glass stop all heat?

No. It changes radiant heat transfer; compare whole-product ratings.

Why is one side of the room hotter?

Sun exposure, glass area, coatings, shading and air leakage may all contribute.
